I did some comparing and here are my findings:
Fancybox: Excellent renderer. Nice options and layout. But on non-English sites the text shown when you hover buttons might be hard to translate.
Fluidbox: Does not work with the 'Wall' layout and is just a popup tool. No navigation of any kind. I would probably never use this.
Lightbox: Looks a bit outdated. Not swipe (touch) support. Shows 'Image... of ' what again is hard to translate if you run your site in a different language. Don;t like the white line around the images and the navigation, close button and titel/description are attached to the image in stead of using the full screen. Also missing features like full-screen, slideshow, etc.
Magnific popup: Pretty nice, but missing thumbnail navigation. And again, this one shows '...of ..'. In dutch this means something else then in English ;-) Np extra features like other renderers, so pretty basic.
Swipbox: Love the simplicity. To bad there are issues with jQuery 3. But because of the simplicity it does miss some nice features other renderers have. It is touch swipe enabled.
My favorite so far: LightGallery: It looks nice. Packed with features like share, download, zoom, slideshow. These options and may other settings can be adjusted in the plugin settings by the way. Not only for this one, but also for the others. But this one does have a lot of options and settings so you can tune it to your liking. And a good thing for non-english sites: Not texts anywhere. So nothing to translate.
So most likely we will use LightGallery as the default for the galleries.
